Saving Money on Gas

With gas prices now reaching almost $3.00 per gallon in some areas, we’re all looking for ways to save at the pump.  The average price for regular gas is up  50 cent from this same time last year meaning you could be spending hundreds more on gas in 2018. Here are a few ways to make sure you’re getting more miles for your money:

Fuel Type

It may seem like the most obvious answer but if your car can use regular fuel, USE IT.  According to Megan McKernan, manager of the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center, “Tests show that there is no benefit to using premium gasoline in a vehicle that requires regular fuel. Premium gasoline is specifically formulated to be compatible with specific types of engine designs and most vehicles can’t even take advantage of the higher octane rating.”

Gas Apps

There’s practically an app for everything these days and gas prices are no different. Check out this article for the best apps for finding cheap gas in your area: https://www.thebalance.com/best-apps-for-cheap-gas-4153833

Rewards

Most service stations provide their own fuel reward programs that typically offer reduced prices and are sometimes linked with stores to offer additional perks. Another option is to use a credit card that offers cash back on purchases. Just be sure to pay the balance before the statement close date to avoid paying interest!

Other ways to save:

  • Vehicle maintenance: Staying up to date on regularly scheduled maintenance to keep your vehicle running at optimal performance and avoid higher fuel consumption.
  • Early Bird gets the worm: Try to fill up on Wednesday or Thursday mornings before stations raise their prices for the weekend road-trip rush.
  • Slow and steady wins the race: No, really. Being cautious about braking and accelerating could save up to 30% of fuel use.
