Saving in Summer - With Kids!

Summertime Savings Tips from FCU!

Summer is here, and we all know what that means – the temperature is rising, the sun is sitting longer in the sky, and children everywhere will be lamenting their boredom during their extended break from school. Keeping your kids entertained can seem like an expensive undertaking, but it certainly doesn’t have to be! Check out these cool ideas to pass the time without busting your budget.

At Home: Kids are becoming more and more scheduled, from sports and clubs to the arts and classes, so taking a break in the summer can be very welcome! Of course, killing time with technology is easy, but doesn’t have to be the only solution. Spend time outside building forts out of cereal boxes, running through sprinklers, or camping in the backyard. If you’d rather stay in from the heat, try out some new card games, free-to-download coloring pages, or around-the-house scavenger hunts.

Around the Block: Your local park or library might be your go-to spot during the summer! Many parks have free events like concerts or evening movies that are perfect for high-energy kids. You can also check your local library’s schedule, as they often try to accommodate students in the summer with book fairs, readings or themed events.

About the Town: Looking to go exploring for the day? Do some research and see what local museums, aquariums, zoos or botanical gardens near you have free admittance, or if they schedule regular discount days. Another good idea is to check your local movie theater - it’s not uncommon for them to show kids movies during the day for discount prices!

The summer is also a great time to get your kids started on the right financial foot; they can stay cool and learn more about money with youth savings accountsfun online games, or by checking out The Centsibles, a superhero team with comics, games, and a TV show all found here.
