Protecting Yourself from the 'Microsoft Scam'

 

As a financial institution, we make it our job to help protect your information from scammers, thieves and fraudsters. Recently, members and non-members have seen an increase in phony calls supposedly from Microsoft Support. These calls attempt to persuade you that your computer is sending information to Microsoft alerting them that your computer has a virus; they are supposedly calling you to help get the issue resolved.  However, the only thing that these criminals truly want to do separate you from your money (by charging you a fee to “fix” the problem), or place software on your computer to steal your personal information like online banking credentials. These individuals making these calls are generally overseas and in countries that may not have extradition treaties with the United States. 

What can you do to protect yourself from these criminals?  There are good tips from Microsoft’s site including:

  • Do not purchase any software or services.
  • Ask if there is a fee or subscription associated with the "service." If there is, hang up.
  • Never give control of your computer to a third party unless you can confirm that it is a legitimate representative of a computer support team with whom you are already a customer.
  • Take the caller's information down and immediately report it to your local authorities.
  • Never provide your credit card or financial information to someone claiming to be from Microsoft tech support.

If you think you may have been scammed, you should:

  • Scan your computer with a reputable antivirus and/or anti-malware solution like MalwareBytes to see if the criminals have installed any remote control software they could use in the future.
  • Change your computer’s password.
  • Change your password on your main email account.
  • Change your password for your any financial institutions, including Florida Credit Union.  Please feel free to contact us and talk about your account options to protect your account information.
